Habarana is a very popular destination for safari lovers, located 181km from Colombo city. It is a small city compared to other big cities of Sri Lanka. It is the starting point of safaris in the nearby Habarana jungle Minneriya Wildlife Sanctuary and Kaudulla Wildlife Sanctuary. It also strategically located closer to Sigiriya Rock Fortress and on the main road to Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and Baticaloa.

The area has some of the best hotels in the country and the greenery and wild life has added value, making the location attractive for tourists. The weather is hot and humid and you can experience occasional thunder showers. During rainy days, jungle trekking can be muddy and messy so be prepared.

At the Minneriya Wildlife Sanctuary, large numbers of Sri Lankan elephants are attracted to grass fields on the edges of the reservoir during the dry season. Elephants gathered here is numbering around 150-200 and sometimes high as 700.
