Weligama it’s a coastal village with sandy beaches located closer to Matara. It is 144km from Colombo. The name “Weligama” in Sinhala language means sandy village, pinpointing the nature of the location. The beaches are peaceful and lovely for swimming. But Weligama offers other attractions as well.
Being populated by fishing community, you can witness big boats reaching shore in the morning with big catch of fish. The other important aspect of fishing in Weligama is Still Fishing – where men sit on the erected pole with a cross bar in the deep water on the beach and try to catch fish using bamboo rods. If you get friendly with them, you have the lucky chance to try yourself!
Another big attraction is “Beeralu” lacemaking which was first introduced to the island by Portuguese in the 16th century. It is remaining as a handicraft till today and a household business carried out by ladies. You can buy unique designs in different colors and create your own fashion clothing!
Don’t forget to visit the Snake Farm located 14km from Weligama along the Akuressa Road. This farm houses a variety of snakes including enormous pythons. If you are dare enough, you can hold them with the assistance from workers.
Actions: Try Still Fishing, visit the Snake farm, buy uniquely designed lace for your attire and of course lovely beaches for morning and evening swim.
